William Becknell was a frontiersman and trader in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. Becknell climbed the ranks quickly during the War of 1812 and from his extensive service on the frontier while battling the British-backed Indians. He eventually reached the rank of Captain and was long known as Captain Becknell. After the military Becknell began trading and working on trade routes. He became the “Father of the Santa Fe Trail” which opened up trade with Mexico.
