When you bait a minnow trap, do the crackers/bread have to be loose/accessible to the fish so they can eat it or can they be concealed in a mesh bait cage?

First pike I have ever caught! I just learned I'm not supposed to hold it vertical, I wasn't aware and was by myself. Didn't hold/touch it's gills though! : r/Fishing
